Radon Testing

Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive noble gas that is formed from the decay of uranium in our rocks and soils. It kills approximately 200 people a year in Ireland. Buildings suck the gas from the foundations into the areas where we live and work. It is odourless, colourless and tasteless it can not be detected by humans.

It can only be measured using a specialized test kit. The World Health Organisation classified Radon a Class 1 carcinogen which when breathed into the lungs this radioactive gas damages lung tissues which can lead to cancer.

Testing in the Workplace

Workplaces are regulated by The Radiological Protection Act, 1991, and The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005. Employers are required to test the workplace and to take remedial action where necessary - the legal action level for radon in the workplace is 400 Bq/m3. The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) is the government agency responsible for matters relating to radiation in Ireland. They have established the legislation and guidelines above for Workplaces and Homes.
